You see evolutionary psychology is referenced a lot, and some of the concepts taken from this scientific discipline are not necessarily translated very well. So sometimes you see erroneous ideas and it could be misleading, and it’s attributed to research whereas it’s not really well researched; the points that people will be making and kind of making a stretch and leap from what evolutionary psychology actually does prove. So, today we’re looking at what the research in evolutionary psychology actually does say, how good the research is in terms of its quality, and where it’s most misunderstood, and some of it’s most interesting findings to date. Today’s guest is very well positioned to comment on this topic, as he is one of the best-known researchers in the field of evolutionary psychology. And his book The Mating Mind, published in , is one of the most referenced. Geoffrey Miller has had a long career in research starting with his PhD in cognitive psychology at Stanford University.

How Tinder “Feedback Loop” Forces Men and Women into Extreme Strategies

I first started listening to The Mating Grounds podcast when it came out a few The definitive Guide To mating, dating, and becoming the man you want to be.

My intuition differs. You use Tinder in bars, venues, and neighborhoods you have chosen. So you end up tussling with, or mating with, or just chatting with, the more attractive members of your own preferred socioeconomic group. I am assuming by the way that male photos can to some extent signal status, income, and education, and not just looks; furthermore the male follow-up can demonstrate this readily. Most of all, Tinder gets you out more.

Going to a bar or public space is a better way to spend time than before, and that draws others out too. Put it this way: George Clooney or a Silicon Valley billionaire can do better — especially better, compared to others — choosing from people than from five. He she has a very good chance of getting his her absolute top favorite pick, or close to it. If you wish, break this down into a positive-sum compatibility component and a competitive zero-sum component; unlike Clooney the milkman may not gain on the latter.

Finally, Tinder may make it easier for married people to find casual sex, again if they have the right qualifications. Therefore those marrieds may, earlier on, decide to choose a spouse on the grounds of IQ and education, again boosting assortative mating in terms of those features. In sum, I expect Tinder to boost assortative mating, at least at the top end of the distribution in terms of IQ and education. And please note, I suspect this increase in assortative mating is a good thing.

The abilities of top achievers have a disproportionate impact on the quality of our lives, due to innovation being a public good.

Evolutionary psychologists who study mating behavior often begin with a hypothesis about how modern humans mate: say, that men think about sex more than women do. Then they gather evidence — from studies, statistics and surveys — to support that assumption. Lately, however, a new cohort of scientists have been challenging the very existence of the gender differences in sexual behavior that Darwinians have spent the past 40 years trying to explain and justify on evolutionary grounds.

Of course, no fossilized record can really tell us how people behaved or thought back then, much less why they behaved or thought as they did. Nonetheless, something funny happens when social scientists claim that a behavior is rooted in our evolutionary past. Assumptions about that behavior take on the immutability of a physical trait — they come to seem as biologically rooted as opposable thumbs or ejaculation.

Using evolutionary psychology to back up these assumptions about men and women is nothing new. They were the way things had always been. In , Robert L. Given the relative paucity of ova and plenitude of sperm, as well as the unequal feeding duties that fall to women, men invest less in children.

Back in , a new craze swept the Internet centered on a dating app called Tinder. The app shows users pictures of potential dating partners in their local area. When two users like each other, the app puts them in contact with its built-in messaging service. Tinder changed the ground rules for dating apps. Until then, most dating services had found matches using a range of factors such as shared interests, age, future plans, and so on.

On Tinder, all that matters is first impressions. This research is hard because there are so many factors to take into account. Tinder, on the other hand, is a much cleaner environment, since it is based only on first impressions, and so has fascinating research potential. And yet nobody has studied mating strategies on Tinder.

Their work reveals some remarkable differences between different groups using Tinder, some counterintuitive phenomenon, and they have even come up with some tips to help men in particular to maximize their chances of success. The team does not have access to raw data from Tinder and so developed another way to gather information. They set up 14 different Tinder accounts designed to mimic ordinary users.

They created three accounts using stock photos of white men, two accounts for white male volunteers with several pictures, and as controls a male account with no picture and a male account with a picture saying the account had been disabled.

In this moment, the flurry of ironic truths about dating in Aspen is dizzying: You will run into a former flame when you least expect it; platonic friends of the opposite sex are always presumed romantic partners, fodder for the small-town rumor mill; and successful courtship seems to require more effort than elsewhere—for recent transplants, especially. No doubt, Colorado mountain towns are strange places to mate.

Aspen, of course, is in a class all its own. While off the beaten path geographically, much like Telluride or Crested Butte, our fair city is very much on the radar of the beautiful people. Its inhabitants are also athletic, intelligent, and charismatic, with worldliness to match. Independence and adrenaline are the two most coveted drugs, and our rich social playground cultivates euphoria and debauchery—in particular after dark.
